There’s an Updated Drupal Logo for Drupal 8
Drupal 8 will ship with a new version of the Drupal logo, known as the Druplicon.
It’s not the biggest news in the world, but this will make some people happy. The discussion about replacing the logo lists several design problems with the current version:
- The ‘freaky alien’ vibe.
- It looks a bit dated – it’s 11 years old now.
- Some people find it “sinister”, or “mean”.
- The lighting on the logo is from top left which can conflict with other sources.
- The color scheme is muddy and out-of-sync with “Seven” administration theme.
Designers in the Drupal community wanted a flatter version if the logo, but one that also maintains a strong link to the original. Here’s the current version of the logo, side-by-side with the new variations:
Here’s also a detailed breakdown of the improvements made in the new version of the logo:
If have a few minutes, it’s interesting to read the full discussion at: https://www.drupal.org/node/2057767.
In that thread you can find the original versions of the logo from the early 2000’s. This particular logo inside the Drop.org name is hilarious:
You can also find wonderfully creative uses of the Drupal logo, some of which we covered before:
P.S. Some pedantic people will say that this is the Drupal “mascot”, but for all intents and purposes, the Druplicon currently serves as the Drupal logo.
Not true. Does the issue say something is decided? Also “the Drupal design team”?!
You’re a cheerful commenter 🙂

“After giving this a lot of thought, I’m in support of changing the logo
and getting the new logo committed to Git prior to Drupal 8 RC1.”
Good grief! That thread about sums up the Drupal core community, for better and for worse. Hugely democratic, not to say inefficient, consultation, in which non-contributors of code say they are made to feel like second-class citizens, and in which Dries says will ultimately be decided by edict from him (though he also says he does not think it an important issue). An object lesson in the anthropology of our tribe.
Interesting fact: Acquia is rare among Drupal shops in not using the Druplicon anywhere on its site (as far as I can see) though there are many icons on Acqia’s site which refer to it.
Well said. Yes, for all those reasons, we thought it was worth pointing out to people … it’s an interesting insight into Drupal.
Addressing the most minor of your points, but the Druplicon can be found in the “Q” in Acquia’s logo. It’s subtle, but it’s there.
